Offering fairness and a voice of hope

Post-Separation Counselling. Good Divorce Advice.

The breakdown of a marriage or primary relationship almost always involves pain and heartache, even for those who are behind the decision. The difficulties are further compounded when there are children involved and now you need to negotiate co-parenting arrangements.

At The Good Relationship Practice we understand that ending a relationship well is key to maintaining a sense of self-worth and ensuring better mental health outcomes down the track. It is also key to paving the way for a new relationship to start and for you to make the right partner choice in the future.

Our specially trained couples therapists can successfully guide you through some “good divorce” practices in a calm and supportive environment. We focus on making meaning of the separation, processing the loss and establishing a plan for the future, particularly around shared parenting. This work can be done as an individual or in joint sessions.

We see couples who have been in heterosexual relationships, queer relationships and open relationships. We are LGBTQ+ affirming therapists. Post-separation counselling is different to mediation – arrange a call consult and we can explain our role.

We can support you with these common issues faced by separating couples:

  • Still undecided

Weighing pros & cons, identifying turning points, forming a shared narrative. We provide a calm, mediated space for you to explore your differences and express your wishes.

  • Grief & loss

Sadness and confusion, simmering anger, feelings of hopelessness, life on hold. We can help you to grieve losses and look after your mental health.

  • How to tell children

When and how to do it, age-appropriate messages, avoiding blame, managing their anger. We can help you to formulate a cohesive message and support your children’s emotions.

  • Co-parenting plans

Adjusting to shared care, effective communication, helping children with transitions. We can help to ensure the orders you agree on have their best chance of success.

  • Contact with the in-laws

When and how to stay in touch, taking sides, sharing grandchildren, attending celebrations. We can help you to set boundaries and foster inter-generational connections.

  • New partners on the scene

Finding love again, quick turnarounds, betrayals & secrets revealed, your ex “comes out”. We can help you to process surprising news and map a way forward.
